Interstate 77 Ramps to Receive Improvements

A $5.2 million project will soon get underway to improve entrance and exit ramps at five Interstate 77 interchanges in north Mecklenburg and south Iredell counties.

Contractor King Asphalt, Inc. of South Carolina, earned the N.C. Department of Transportation contract that calls for grading, paving, and drainage work at these locations:

  • Sunset Road (Exit 16)
  • Harris Boulevard (Exit 18)
  • N.C. 73 (Exit 25)
  • Griffith Street (Exit 30)
  • Williamson Road (Exit 33)

Since I-77 is heavily traveled, any necessary ramp and lane closures will take place at night between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Other closure restrictions will be in place for holidays and special events that may generate heavy traffic volumes.

One exception is the Sunset Road interchange, where contract crews will work solely on the entrance ramps to I-77 North & South. These ramps entail more extensive repairs down to their subgrade, so the contract includes a 60-day window calling for continuous work to them. The ramps will not be closed at the same time, but repairs must be completed to both ramps within that time frame.

Work can start as early as the end of June and must be complete by spring of 2027.
