Building With Our Veterans, Code Enforcement‘s employment training program that recruits, trains and hires eligible veterans to become code officials, has been recognized by national and state agencies as an important innovation in recruitment, hiring and training among its many peers nationwide.
The program is a joint venture with the County’s Community Support Services, Veterans Services Division, and Central Piedmont Community College. Participants spend a year in classes and training on the job with County staff before having the option of taking the code official certification exam and interviewing to become County code officials. The program is now in its second year.
The National Association of Counties (NACo) recognized the “Building With Our Veterans” program with two awards – one of the nation’s top “100 Brilliant Ideas at Work” and with a 2017 “Best in Category” NACo Achievement Award. Additionally, the Hybrid Collaborative Delivery Team (HCDT) in Code Enforcement was also awarded a 2017 NACo Achievement Award.
Building With Our Veterans was also recently informed of the LGFCU Excellence in Innovation Award from the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, which will be presented in late August.
