Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte have partnered to launch OpenCounter, an easy-to-use online tool for entrepreneurs looking to start or grow their business in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
OpenCounter is a web-based tool that helps customers in Charlotte with building a new business or expanding or relocating an existing one. By answering a series of questions about the business and the location the owner is considering, the tool guides business owners in estimating City and County permit requirements and associated fees surrounding construction, renovation and zoning.
“We’re excited to bring this tool to our customers,” said Ebenezer Gujjarlapudi, director of Mecklenburg County’s Land Use & Environmental Services Agency. “Building or renovating a structure can be a cumbersome process for many. However, here in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area, we pride ourselves in working with our customers to build a thriving community, and this tool is one of many in our toolbox that is designed to help them start, expand or relocate a business.”
This collaborative effort will help encourage business development, spur economic growth and strengthen the city-county partnership. Through OpenCounter, the city and county will also gain valuable insight about the region’s economic growth and vitality, and the needs of Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s diverse customer base.
“The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have worked together closely to develop solutions to make the process of starting a business easier for our customers to understand,” said Ann Wall, assistant city manager with the City of Charlotte. “OpenCounter provides entrepreneurs an opportunity to learn more about how to start or expand their dream business, while we learn more about the dynamics of our vibrant business community.”
City and County officials will monitor customer feedback on the tool and consider making adjustments in the future as needed. The goal is to make the tool as useful as possible for business owners seeking to become part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s business community.
With a high quality of life, below-average cost of living, world-class arts and major league sports, Charlotte-Mecklenburg is a great place to start and grow a business. The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are proud to partner with OpenCounter and its customers to continue building a thriving community.
