Charlotte awards airport contracts

The voted Monday to award two contracts for construction and expansion at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Archer Western Contractors LLC was awarded a $30.5 million contract for the Concourse E gate expansion and training facility construction. The project will add 31,000 square feet to the concourse and include additional passenger hold rooms, public restrooms and passenger loading bridges. The training facility for airline employees is a tenant-requested 8,500-square-foot addition that will also include a room for unaccompanied traveling minors.

Edison Foard Construction Services LLC was awarded a $24.5 million contract for the Concourse E baggage transfer facility and ramp expansion that will also add a lavatory dump station and a ground-support-equipment fueling facility. The 76,400-square-foot baggage transfer facility will multiple conveyors and sorting devices. A second, 6,700-square-foot building will be used staff offices and support functions.

The city said in a statement that since Concourse E opened in 2002, the number of aircraft and passengers using the concourse has continued to increase, and the expansion and construction will allow the airport to handle the increased traffic more efficiently and to better serve customers.

Each contract was awarded to the lowest responsive, responsible bidder.
