Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Michael Poirier was given a ceremonial key to a mortgage-free home Aug. 29 at a Darius Rucker concert at PNC Music Pavilion.

He was given the Winston-Salem house as part of Project Rebuild True Hero. Project Rebuild is a partnership between the Military Warriors Support Foundation and 7UP Snapple. Other sponsors included Wells Fargo and Wal-Mart.

Poirier was wounded during a tour in Afghanistan.  He has also served in Iraq, Germany and the U.S.

“It is an honor for Wells Fargo to serve members of the military and we take seriously our commitment to help and service members reach their financial goals,” said Marie Day Hayes, Wells Fargo senior vice president and regional director of community relations and outreach, in a statement. “The home donation program is one of the many ways that we do that. Since 2012 we have donated more than 250 properties that have been awarded to veterans and service members to help them achieve the dream of home ownership.”
