Mayor: Updated offer soon on old NC hospital land

RALEIGH — The mayor of says she believes there soon will be an agreement with ‘s administration to acquire land at a now-closed North Carolina mental hospital the city wants to convert into a regional park.

Nancy McFarlane made the comments Thursday following a closed-door Raleigh City Council meeting. She says an updated offer for the Dorothea Dix property near downtown could occur this week.

A 2012 lease agreement reached with then-Gov. Beverly Perdue was set aside by McCrory after lawmakers threatened to void it because they felt it wasn’t a good transaction. Negotiations resumed, but they’ve been slow.

State government wants to keep some of the 300-plus acres for office space, as it’s currently used. The two sides also have disagreed on who would foot environmental cleanup costs.
