CONCORD – In another sign that the work to widen Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County is almost complete, the N.C. Department of Transportation has revealed that on Friday it will reinstate a 65-mph speed limit on that stretch of interstate.
The limit on I-85, north of Exit 49 at Concord Mills, had been lowered to 55 mph because of construction activities, but the work is starting to wrap up and is expected to be finished by the end of September, according to DOT spokeswoman Jen Thompson.
Drivers on I-85 still will have to deal with a 55-mph speed limit between exits 46 and 49 to accommodate the construction of the Interstate 485 interchange, the N.C. DOT said. That work is set to finish by the end of 2014, Thompson said.
The I-85 project was combined with the I-485 project by N.C. DOT and involved widening about seven miles of the interstate from four to eight lanes from south of Bruton Smith Boulevard to north of N.C. 73 in Cabarrus County. Traffic congestion has often been a problem as a result of the slower speed limit and construction work.
