The North Carolina Department of Transportation this week awarded three contracts, valued at $12.2 million, for road resurfacing in three nearby counties, according to a DOT news release.
Charlotte-based Blythe Construction Inc. won a $5.6 million contract from the N.C. DOT for work on 24 miles of road in Union County, the release says. The primary roads for which Blythe was contracted are a 4-mile stretch of N.C. 207, from J.D. Helms Road to Stack Road, and a 1.3-mile stretch of U.S. 601, near the Jack in the Box restaurant. The company also will be responsible for work on 10 sections of secondary roads.
The N.C. DOT also awarded a $3.4 million contract to Blythe to resurface more than 20 miles of road in Cabarrus County, according to the DOT. Blythe will be responsible for working on 3.1 miles of N.C. 200, from Mount Pleasant Road to the Stanly County line, as well as work on 11 sections of secondary roads.
Barnhill Contracting Co., of Tarboro, was awarded a $3.2 million contract and will be responsible for repaving 2.7 miles of U.S. 52 South, from south of Diggs Road to north of the Morven city limits; 7.8 miles of N.C. 742 South, from south of Robinson Bridge Road to the South Carolina state line; and three sections of secondary roads, the release says.
The contracts say the companies may start work as early as July 1. Blythe must complete its Union County project by June 20, 2015, and its Cabarrus County projects by June 30, 2015. Barnhill also will be required to finish its project by June 20, 2015, the DOT said in the release.
These projects are three of the 12 road and bridge contracts worth $403.6 million recently awarded by N.C. DOT for projects across the state, the release says. The contracts were awarded to the lowest bidders, as required by state law. The low bids received on the projects were just more than $10 million below NCDOT estimates, or 2.4 percent lower.
