Radio station to host panel discussion on HOA and owners’ rights

WFAE-FM radio is hosting a public panel discussion on homeowners associations and their relationships with the residents they govern from 7-8:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 at Davidson Day School.

Part of the station’s public conversation series, the discussion, called “Your HOA & You: Who Rules the Neighborhood?” will explore the advantages and disadvantages of living in a community governed by a homeowners association as well as the rights and responsibilities of boards and residents.

Thousands of Charlotteans live in communities with homeowners associations. While most associations are credited with making communities safer and more livable, some residents do complain that the governing boards can be too restrictive and capricious in enforcing community rules.

Among the panelists participating in the discussion are Mike Hunter, an attorney at Horack, Talley, Pharr and Lowndes P.A. specializing in community association law, and state Rep. Rodney Moore, a democrat representing Mecklenburg County, who has challenged the HOA’s power to foreclose on homeowners.

The conversation will also include state laws governing homeowners associations and some new proposals under consideration by the legislature.
