Monroe-based Weathergard has won a $689,898 project to repair a school’s roof in Gaston County. But it’s not clear when it will begin working on Cramerton Middle School.
“We’re not going to start the project until the weather gets more stable,” said Jim Parks, executive director of auxiliary services for Gaston County Schools. “Even though it has been 70 degrees this week, this is not what you normally expect for January or February.”
The school board also received bids from Charlotte-based Radco, which bid $703,000; Charlotte-based Tecta America Carolians, $723,820; Charlotte-based Interstate Roofing, $729,250; and Charlotte-based Mecklenburg Roofing, $729,509.
The Gaston County Board of Commissioners approved funding for the project on Jan. 26. The state is providing $517,423; the county, $172,475.
Work will involve removing a shingle roof and replacing it with a single-ply PVC membrane one. The PVC membrane roof will “simulate (a) standing seam metal roof” according to bid documents.
“Once we award the contract, then the contractor can get their agreements signed, payment and performance bonds initiated and even buy materials,” Parks said. “But we’re telling the contractor to probably wait until spring break so we can be sure which way the weather will go.”
Weathergard was formed in 1976.
