The Newton City Council held several public hearings regarding rezoning at their Jan. 16 meeting. Among them was a public hearing on a rezoning application for 2.85 acres at 2223 Indian Trail from an exclusive manufacturing district to a general manufacturing district.

There was also a public hearing on a rezoning application for 115 acres at 100 S.W. Blvd., from single-family residential to a planned development office and institutional district. Catawba County, which owns the property, has a new animal shelter and an expansion to the Justice Center planned for the property, according to information from the city.

Also, the council considered a zoning ordinance text amendment to allow for temporary signs on and off properties, including street rights of way.

The council will vote on the changes at their February meeting.
