Carolinas HealthCare System could be spending millions on renovation projects throughout the Charlotte area.

This week, CHS filed three certificate of need applications with the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation.

In one request, CHS wants to add 19 licensed beds at Carolinas Medical Center, a project that has an estimated cost of $3.8 million. It would involve the renovation of about 8,000 square feet.

Related renovations at CMC-Mercy are projected to cost about $6.7 million and involve upgrading about 28,000 square feet.

CHS is also seeking approval to move 29 inpatient rehabilitation beds to CMC-Pineville from Carolinas Rehabilitation and CMC-Mercy. Costs are projected at about $40 million for CHS and its joint venture partner, Carolinas Specialty Hospital. The project will require the addition of about 86,000 square feet of new space in a building leased at the CMC-Pineville campus.

CHS says a decision by the state is anticipated in March.
