The Charlotte City Council has approved the rezoning of 1.66 acres at 7841 Idlewild Road.

New Hope Baptist Church sought the zoning change from residential (R-4) to institutional.

The church wants to convert a 1,350-square-foot mission house into a free dental care facility while using a separate 8,150-square-foot building for religious activities. The facilities will share a driveway and a parking lot.

The council gave its OK Monday.

The change is supported by the Eastland Area Plan, which was adopted in 2003 and calls for an institutional use on the parcel, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Department.

Planning staff and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission’s Zoning Committee also recommended approval of the request.
