Kannapolis officials held a “virtual groundbreaking” at the a week ago today to promote the second phase of a statewide project to bring broadband access to rural areas, including some in the Charlotte area.

The $105 million project, funded with $75 million from the federal stimulus program, includes the installation of 1,650 miles of broadband fiber cable, said Noah Garrett, spokesman for MCNC, a Raleigh-based nonprofit leading the rural broadband project.

The NCRC will serve as the hub for the new broadband network, which is expected to help create jobs and connect schools and universities, Garret said.

MCNC has awarded contracts for the project to Hickory-based CommScope Inc.; Columbia, S.C.-based Edwards Telecommunications; Loganville, Ga.-based Fiber Technologies; Durham-based Globe Communications; and Raleigh-based Kimley-Horn & Associates.

Construction is expected to be finished by 2013.
