Duke Energy mulls minority interest in SC nuclear reactors

Listen to this article

Charlotte-based Duke Energy Carolinas is considering having a minority interest in Santee Cooper’s 45 percent ownership of planned nuclear reactors at V.C. Summer Nuclear Generating Station in South Carolina.

Duke has told the Public Service Commission of South Carolina that it has signed a letter of intent with Santee Cooper for an interest in 5 to 10 percent of the capacity of the two units.

It’s not a done deal. Duke said it still has to research whether having an ownership interest in the reactors would benefit its customers.

Duke said it has been looking into ways to provide safe, clean, reliable and affordable electricity and the agreement with Santee Cooper is a “positive step” toward that goal.
