With Interstate 77 becoming more overwhelmed, the Lynx Red Line should be built.

That’s according to , chairwoman of the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners.

“The north commuter Red Line will go through three northern Mecklenburg towns into Iredell (County),” Roberts wrote on Twitter last week. “Declining capacity of (Interstate 77) means the Red Line is needed.”

Last week, Roberts and the other commissioners mulled the idea of setting up a joint powers agreement spanning Mecklenburg and Iredell counties to plan the Red Line but stipulated that the committee would have no taxing authority.

Meanwhile, those waiting for Lynx light-rail service to the south of the city, along Independence Boulvard, might have to wait a little longer.

“Development on Independence Boulevard (is not) dense enough for light rail,” Roberts tweeted. “Highways are hostile environments for pedestrians (and there is) not enough economic development potential.”
