Builders has begun construction of a new station for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Northwest Division. The $19.7 million build will include sustainable elements that create renewable energy onsite as part of Charlotte’s goal to power facilities and fleet vehicles entirely with zero-carbon sources by 2030. The team broke ground earlier this month for an anticipated completion in September 2026.

“Swinerton has been an integral part of the Charlotte business community since opening our office here in 2018, and many of our team members are happy to call this city home. We are both personally and professionally proud of Charlotte’s efforts to become a greener, more sustainable city,” explains Kevin Smith, vice president, division manager, Swinerton Carolinas Division. “It is our privilege to partner with the city to help achieve its sustainability goals through the construction of municipal facilities with low carbon footprints.” As construction manager, Swinerton will oversee preconstruction, compliance, field operations and risk management.

Swinerton is also currently building Charlotte Fire Department’s Fire Station #30, an all-electric fire station and one of the first all-electric facilities of its kind in the United States. This $16.4 million project sets a new standard for public and civic spaces across North Carolina and is on track for an early completion this summer. These projects are part of the Sustainable and Resilient Charlotte by 2050 Resolution passed unanimously by the Charlotte City Council in 2018.

Located at 1800 Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road on nearly 10 acres in northwest Charlotte, the police station is a one-story, 16,000-square-foot steel-frame building expected to house approximately 50 employees. Designed by Charlotte-based architecture firm C DESIGN, it includes 11 private offices, two meeting spaces, a detective bullpen, a suspect interview room, secure evidence and weapons storage and rooms for mechanical and electrical equipment. Employee amenities feature a fitness room, a break room with kitchen, along with two locker rooms with bathrooms.

The station will be climate-controlled by a geothermic well field heating and cooling system that uses the stable temperature of the earth to heat and cool the building without the use of fuel or electricity. A solar field is also planned to provide renewable energy to power the building’s infrastructure.

Since expanding to the Southeast in 2018, the Carolinas Division has constructed nearly $400 million of commercial environments. The dedicated team of 90 construction leaders specializes in corporate interiors and buildings, healthcare, education, restaurants and hospitality, multifamily, civic and mass timber construction.
