Mecklenburg County OKs sportsplex contract

The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a $1.3 million construction contract for Sossamon Construction Co. to build the Friendship Sportsplex. Sossamon was the lowest of three bidders. The other bids were submitted by Eagle Wood Inc. and JD Goodrum Co., according to county documents.
Friendship Sportsplex is a park planned to be built near Friendship Baptist Church on McAllister Drive in Charlotte. Once completed, it will comprise two softball fields, two Little League fields, tennis courts, walking trails and a playground.
The park originally was scheduled to be completed in spring 2016, but that timetable likely will be pushed back.
