What do former all-star athletes do once they retire from professional sports? They get into the business, of course.

Bloomberg News is reporting that the Dallas Cowboys franchise is turning into a breeding ground for real estate honchos. The latest athlete to throw in his cleats is former Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith. Smith launched a Dallas-based property-services firm less than a year ago; now he has his sights set at expanding the franchise E. Smith Realty into the Big Apple’s commercial market.

Smith is following in the footsteps of fellow Pro Football Hall of Fame member Roger Staubach, whose real estate company Staubach & Co., was acquired by brokerage Jones Lang LaSalle.

They aren’t the only two former professional athletes pursuing second acts in commercial real estate. Bloomberg reports others include former tennis champ Andre Agassi, former basketball star Shaquille O’Neal, former New York Jets wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson, ex-Boston Red Sox slugger Mo Vaughn and even Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, who was so successful in property investment he bought a stake in the Los Angeles  Dodgers baseball team.

Not bad for an encore career.
