CORNELIUS — Construction has begun on a $2.4 million, 10,000-square foot expansion and facelift of the store on North Cove Road in .

Harris Teeter No. 179 , in the Jetton Village shopping center, will be renovated in phases, with work expected to be finished by summer, Catherine Becker, spokeswoman for the Matthews-based grocery chain, said.

Plans call for adding a beer cooler, a “Cheese Island” pizza bar, an Asian/American hot-food bar and a pet center, Becker said.

She said the Cornelius Harris Teeter was built in 1998 and underwent minor renovations two years ago. But this will be the store’s first major renovation, she said.

Harris Teeter tries to renovate and remodel its stores every few years, she said.

Mooresville-based Barger Construction is the general contractor on the project.
