Carolinas HealthCare System announced Friday that it has filed two certificate of need applications to build health care pavilions on the campus of Carolinas Medical Center-Morrocroft and near the intersection of Interstate 485 and Providence Road in south Charlotte.

In the filing made late Thursday with the state Division of Facility Services, CHS is seeking state approval to build freestanding emergency departments at Morrocroft near SouthPark Mall and at a new site to be called CMC-Providence on Providence Road, south of I-485 near the Mecklenburg County line.

The emergency department addition at CMC-Morrocroft will be 30,000 square feet and cost approximately $28 million.

CMC-Providence will be approximately 26,500 square feet of new construction and cost about $27.7 million.

A decision from the state for both facilities is expected in February, with an anticipated opening date of January 2014.
