FairPoint Communications said it has expanded broadband Internet access to nearly 90 percent of its customers in Vermont, reaching its regulatory goal for the state.

FairPoint said it now offers broadband access to about 140 communities and neighborhoods in Vermont.

The Charlotte-based company had to meet the goal by June 30. The Vermont Public Service Board had to give the company an extension because of rain-related flooding.
