A Charlotte-based owner of parking lots is rolling out technology that will allow its customers to use their cell phones to pay for parking.

Starting Monday, the service will be implemented at more than 30 nongated Preferred Parking Service surface lots covering more than 3,000 parking spaces in uptown.

Atlanta-based Parkmobile USA is supplying the technology. Customers register online then use a mobile app, the Internet or a toll-free number to pay for parking.

Benjamin Sands, general manager of PPS, said the company hopes to implement the service in Asheville and Greensboro in the coming months.

PPS is based at 212 S. Tryon St.
