CHARLOTTE — M/I Homes’ Charlotte operation must not have received the memo: It’s the holiday season, when homebuilding — and home-selling — traditionally go bye-bye.
In November, Mecklenburg County issued 17 building permits worth nearly $2.5 million to Columbus, Ohio-based M/I. The majority — 10 — of those were awarded after Thanksgiving, when the Christmas season traditionally begins.
Building up to 20 homes a month in the county is par for the course during busy times of the year, such as spring and summer, said Tamara Lynch, the company’s Charlotte vice president of sales and marketing.
“But, at the moment, we’re stronger than usual this time of year,” she said, adding that M/I sold 19 homes in the Charlotte area in October, fewer than she expected to sell.
“The campaigning hurt us in the run-up to the election,” she said. “But in November we sold 26, which is better than we expected.”
Seven of the permits issued to M/I in November were for the company to build homes in the Mallard Lake subdivision, near the dead end of Interstate 485 into Interstate 85 near the University City North and Mallard Creek sections of Charlotte.
Houses built by M/I in Mallard Lake have base prices ranging from about $120,000 to about $210,000, according M/I’s website.
