Groundbreaking Ceremony Celebrates New Affordable Housing Community in Charlotte: The Barton South 

City leaders, housing partners, and community advocates gathered today to celebrate the groundbreaking of The Barton South, a 140-unit affordable housing development led by Blue Ridge Atlantic Development in partnership with the City of Charlotte, LISC Charlotte/CHOIF, INLIVIAN, RBC Capital Markets, Bank OZK, Lument, and the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. 

Located at 2120 Barton Boulevard in Charlotte’s District 3, The Barton South will provide one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments for families earning between 30% and 80% of the area median income (AMI), including 28 units with project-based vouchers. The community is within walking distance of two Lynx Blue Line stations, connecting residents to employment centers, schools, and amenities across the city. 

“This is one of my favorite projects,” said Charlotte City Councilmember Tiawana Brown, who has lived in District 3 for 54 years. “Days like today matter so much to me because they give working families, teachers, nurses, and city workers a place to live in the neighborhoods they love. You deserve to be here, near jobs, near transit, and near opportunity.” 

Representing the City of Charlotte, Warren Wooten, Assistant Director of Housing & Neighborhood Services, emphasized the persistence behind the project. “We went through some challenges on this one and it took a minute to get it done, but nothing worth doing is easy. This development is absolutely worth it,” he said. “With access to transit and nearby community resources like the CW Williams Clinic, The Barton South will be a great asset as we continue expanding mobility and housing options in Charlotte.” 

Ralphine Caldwell, Executive Director of LISC Charlotte, reflected on the broader impact of affordable housing investments: “We’ve invested over $106 million in Charlotte since 2019, and developments like The Barton South are what that looks like on the ground. These homes will serve our first-year teachers, our police officers, our firefighters – the people who keep this city running. We have to keep putting a face to affordable housing.” 

Chris Eisenzimmer, President of Blue Ridge Atlantic Development, acknowledged the collective effort behind the milestone. “Housing is hard, and this project was no exception. It has been a six-year labor of love that shows what true public-private partnership can achieve. We couldn’t be more thrilled to break ground today and look forward to welcoming families home next year.” 

The Barton South will feature high-quality, durable materials, including brick veneer and HardiePlank siding, along with amenities such as a fitness center, multipurpose community room, computer station, and craft/game room. In collaboration with local nonprofits, on-site programs will support resident financial empowerment and long-term stability.
