StorageUnits.com, a reliable and user-friendly platform for finding the best and most convenient storage facilities, has released new findings revealing that 4 in 10 baby boomers never plan to sell their home. The survey of 1,200 Americans—600 boomer homeowners and 600 millennials—highlights generational divides around housing, affordability, and mobility.
Among boomers, 37% say they never plan to sell. The top reasons: their home is paid off (57%), they don’t want to leave their neighborhood (40%), moving is too much hassle (39%), and they see no better alternatives (36%).
“Many boomers are staying put simply because the idea of uprooting decades of memories and belongings is overwhelming,” says Reagan Phillips, Home Organization & Storage Expert at StorageUnits.com.
Millennials face a different reality. Just 37% currently own a home, and 10% say they may never be able to afford one. To change that, 44% plan to take on a second job, 37% are willing to buy a smaller home, and 24% say they’ll move to a less desirable area. Others are considering creative solutions—21% plan to buy with a friend or family member, while some are delaying children (16%) or moving back in with parents (14%) to save money.
“Millennials are determined to put down roots, even if it means sacrificing luxuries to get there,” says Phillips.
Tensions between generations are growing. Forty-one percent of millennials think the government should incentivize boomers to sell and free up homes. Only 16% of boomers agree. And 97% of boomers reject the idea that their generation is to blame for the housing crisis, instead pointing to the high cost of living (72%) and lack of available homes (55%).
