At its regular meeting of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday, the commissioners:

  • Voted to approve leasing from the N.C. Department of Transportation a 144-acre piece of land that wasn’t needed to complete the Interstate 485 loop. The N.C. DOT bought the land for the interstate project, but it went unused. The land is south of I-485, north of Long Creek and east of Brookshire Boulevard, according to a map provided by the county. Mecklenburg County will pay $1 per year for the initial 50-year period to lease the land and will be eligible to lease it thereafter for an unlimited number of 10-year periods. The county is planning future walking trails and bike paths, and possibly a greenway, on the land.
  • Approved an interlocal agreement that would help the town of Cornelius build its Caldwell Station Creek Greenway. The county will buy – with some funding from Cornelius – 11.85 acres along Bailey Road in the town’s extraterritorial jurisdiction. Most of the land will be used for the greenway, but part of it could be used by the county in the future for a park. The county will spend up to $825,000 for the land and Cornelius will contribute $94,750, according to county documents.
