DAVIDSON — Gypsum wallboard sheathing on the exterior walls, plywood on the roof, a fire sprinkler system inside and an elevator pit and shaft are the latest additions to the four-story, 14,458-square-foot Mooney’s Corner building being constructed in this town.
In the next week or two, a brick façade will follow on the $2.7 million office and retail building on North Main Street, developer Brad Remmey said.
“Yep, we’ve been really, really busy, and things are moving right along,” Remmey said.
Over the summer, Charlotte-based Heard Ratzlaff Construction began work on the building on a site between Davidson Town Hall and the JJ Wade & Associates insurance building.
JJ Wade will move into the new building’s upper three floors, which house office space. Retail space will occupy the ground floor.
The design, by Lawrence Group, of St. Louis, features a gently curving, a three-story front and a fourth floor — set back from the bottom three — to accommodate a patio on top of the third floor. The fourth floor with have a mansard roof.
Mooney’s Corner is named for a business that was once on the site. The property was once home to the Old Davidson Library building, which was demolished to make way for the new project.
In other news, Remmey said he has stepped out of the homebuilding business for now, leaving Davidson-based Artisan Custom Homes, which is being reorganized.
Meanwhile, Remmey has entered into business with partners in Concord and is now overseeing the sand-blasting, painting and maintenance of large fuel tanks for clients such as US Airways and the U.S. Navy.
“It’s a nice little niche-y business,” Remmey said.
