With less than two months to go before Charlotte will host the Democratic National Convention, construction can finally begin to convert Time Warner Cable Arena into a venue for the event.
On Monday, the DNC committee is set to receive the keys to the arena, and that means a construction team that includes Charlotte-based Rodgers can begin the construction project, according to the committee.
Construction costs for the conversion are roughly $7 million, Ryan Daniels, DNCC spokesman, said.
“Some preconstruction has already taken place,” Daniels said. “We’re going to go in full force to get it done.”
Rodgers could not be reached for comment. The company is part of the construction-management team for the project. Atlanta-based developer H.J. Russell & Co. and Lanham, Md.-based trade show-management company Hargrove are the other members of the team.
Of the $7 million, $3 million is being spent on a theater for the arena, according to a building permit awarded by Mecklenburg County.
Calls were placed to DNCC officials for details on the permit, but they were not returned.
Media have been invited to a 10 a.m. kickoff at the arena. There will also be a tour for media to learn more about the construction.
Daniels said that while construction will start Monday, the Charlotte Bobcats store has already been converted into headquarters for the committee’s staff.
