Hawthorne Mill moves closer to historic designation (access required)

City Council members listened Monday night to a proposal to designate Louise Cotton Mill as a Mecklenburg County Historic Landmark, which would allow the developer to move one step closer to redeveloping the 19th century mill.The Louise Mill, off Hawthorne Lane just north of Central Avenue, is now known around town as Hawthorne Mill, and Clachan Properties, a developer out of Richmond, Va., for months has been navigating the regulatory landscape in Charlotte in the company’s attempts to transform the old mill into a mixed-use, multifamily development.

Historic designation would be grist for Hawthorne Mill (access required)

Louise Cotton Mill, now known around town as Hawthorne Mill, is one of several old textile factories that serve as a historic reminder of what became known as Charlotte’s first true industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But the redevelopment of Hawthorne Mill differs from new multifamily development in that developers can’t just come in and put up projects as they wish. There are strict guidelines governing historic properties that don’t apply to new projects.
