Beacon Partners has announced that construction for The Square at South End, has begn, with project completion in 4th Quarter 2020. The new, mixed-used development along South Tryon St. between West Blvd. and Hawkins St., will encompass a 10-story, 150,000-square-foot office building with 8,000 square feet of retail on the first floor. The project also includes multi-family apartments with an outdoor plaza connecting the two buildings and incorporating the future Wilmore Centennial Park at South End into the landscaping.
As part of the project, Beacon Partners will be partnering with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation to develop Wilmore Centennial Park. The park will be developed on approximately 1.5 acres located at the intersection of S. Tryon St. and Kingston St. and will interface with Beacon’s project connecting to West Blvd.
“We’re excited to be partnering with Beacon Partners in bringing the South End and Wilmore neighbors a new County park,” said Mecklenburg County Manager Dena R. The office building will be tailored to the South End aesthetic with exposed brick, steel beams and glass and offer 15,000 – 17,000 SF floor plates, floor-to-ceiling windows throughout, as well as outdoor decks on multiple floors overlooking Wilmore Centennial Park. Employees will enjoy views of South End and Uptown Charlotte through the vista of the park.
A long list of amenities will create the ideal live/work environment. The project will feature two-story glass fitness center with a mezzanine fronting the park, an outdoor wellness area for group classes or yoga, plus men’s and women’s locker rooms and showers. The building will also have a 2,400 SF coffee bar and lounge area for tenants and guests that opens up to the park, plus a rooftop restaurant bar with a 2,500 SF patio overlooking Uptown.
The Square at South End will also put employees and residents within walking distance of some of the best restaurants and retail in Charlotte. It is situated one block from East/West Blvd. light rail stop, one block from The Design Center and one block from the Rail Trail.
For its third mixed-use project in South End since 2014, Beacon has partnered with David Furman, founder of Centro Cityworks, to develop the multi-family units which will surround the parking deck. Beacon Partners has collaborated with Furman on two other projects in South End, 1616 Center and The RailYard Micro Units.
“We are grateful to Beacon Partners and Mecklenburg County for their investment and vision,” said Michael J. Smith, president and CEO of Charlotte Center City Partners. “Wilmore Centennial Park is an essential component of the South End Vision Plan, and we are so pleased to see this vital public space come to life. It will be an incredible place for the Wilmore and South End neighborhoods to come together with our entire community.”
