Deputy City Manager Ron Kimble announced that he will retire from the city effective Jan. 31.
“We thank Ron for his invaluable leadership as well as the many successes he led and had a hand in during his time with our organization,” City Manager Marcus Jones said. “Ron was instrumental in evolving this city, its services and its partnerships, and for that, we are deeply grateful.”
Kimble has worked for the City of Charlotte for 16 years and has served in the deputy and assistant city manager roles since 2000 primarily responsible for economic development, redevelopment projects, hospitality and tourism and business corridor improvement activities. Most recently, he served as interim city manager for six months until Marcus D. Jones assumed the role permanently.
“Ron has been one of our visitor economy’s most powerful advocates over the years, and we count ourselves lucky to have collaborated with such a visionary,” said Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority CEO Tom Murray. “His forward-looking contributions combined with his unwavering optimism have produced some of Charlotte’s most defining assets that have made it, and continue to make it, such a sought after destination. They say you should leave things better than you found them, and Ron has certainly done just that for our city.”
“Ron Kimble is a deal maker and a builder of community,” said Charlotte Chamber CEO and President Bob Morgan. “His fingerprints are all over virtually every major public/private partnership in our city over the past 16 years. Ron is also a remarkably positive and optimistic human being who inspires all who know and have had the pleasure to work with him.”
Kimble led major city initiatives including Bank of America stadium improvements, BB&T Ballpark, the U.S. National Whitewater Center, the Levine Center for the Arts, Spectrum Arena upgrades and the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Most recently, Kimble led the city as interim city manager during one of the most difficult times in Charlotte’s history. Kimble previously served as city manager in Greenville, N.C., before joining the City of Charlotte in 2000.
Jones also announced he hired Sabrina Joy-Hogg to fill the position of deputy city manager. Joy-Hogg has served the Commonwealth of Virginia in leadership roles at the state and city government level for over 25 years. Most recently from 2011 – current, she serves as chief deputy city manager and acting director of the Office of Budget and Strategic Planning in Norfolk. She previously served as senior quality and finance analyst from 2004-2007.
“Sabrina’s experience, passion and vision are a great fit for the City of Charlotte,” Jones said. “I’ve seen her dedication first-hand, and I know she will do great things for this community as she did for the Commonwealth of Virginia and the City of Norfolk.”
Responding to this news, Ric Brown, the Secretary of Finance for the Commonwealth of Virginia, said “Sabrina’s leadership is apparent in many of the successes accomplished by the City of Norfolk. The City of Charlotte is gaining a valuable asset in Sabrina’s financial expertise. But more importantly, Sabrina has the ability to balance her technical and analytical attributes with a good-hearted concern for others. That is a wonderful trait! We will miss her and wish her all the best.”
Joy-Hogg will start in Charlotte Jan. 17.
