HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — Hilton Head Island leaders plan to annex a nearby island where an international developer plans a luxury resort.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that the town council agreed Tuesday to begin the process of annexing 350-acre Bay Point Island.
The council heard from representatives of Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas of Bangkok, Thailand, which plans a five-star vacation resort. A company official said it operates environmentally sensitive resorts worldwide including, among other places, China, the Maldives, Oman, Portugal and Vietnam.
Conservationists say developing the small barrier island would damage areas that are habitat for declining shorebird populations. There are an estimated 5,000 shorebirds on the island.
Before the island can be annexed, there would be public zoning meetings and a development agreement would have to be reached.
