The York County Council on Monday unanimously approved the first reading of a developer’s request to rezone 37 acres for office and retail use at S.C. Highway 160 and Dave Gibson Road in Fort Mill.
Dehler Hart is requesting the rezoning for the vacant tract to business development district from a rural development designation.
A public hearing on the rezoning petition is scheduled for June 20, when the council will vote on the second of three readings.
The York County Planning Commission last month voted to recommend that the council approve the petition. The planning staff also recommended approval even though the proposed rezoning is inconsistent with the county’s comprehensive land-use plan that calls for low-density single-family residences in the area.
The staff said the 37 acres is part of a 53-acre site that is currently zoned for business use. The proposed rezoning, it said, would result in development that is consistent with the remainder of the parcel.
