Matthews to share in cost of Phillips house study

The Matthews Board of Commissioners has agreed to participate in a cost-sharing agreement to develop options for the historic Phillips House and adjacent barn on West Charles Street.

The town will contribute $3,125 of the $12,500 that the Charlotte Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission has proposed paying Adams Group Architects for planning services and recommendations for the vacant property.

Adams Group plans to inspect the site, conduct meetings with town stakeholders on possible reuses of the 1-acre tract, and submit development scenarios to be integrated into a request for proposals.

The Landmarks Commission considers the Phillip House, a Craftsman style bungalow built in 1925, to have historical significance because of its high degree of structural integrity and location in the center of town.
