Urban design conference to be held in Raleigh

The 13th annual Urban Design Conference will be held March 18 in Raleigh. This year’s theme is “Design for Evolving Downtowns: People. Place. Practice” and the event will take place at the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel.

The conference will explore the role of people, places, and models of practice in designing for  urban cores, with particular focus on the public realm, housing, development innovation, social justice, and transportation.

Keynote speakers include:

·Tom Balsley of Thomas Balsley Associates, a New York City-based design firm.

·Tami Door  of the Downtown Denver Partnership.

·Adam Glaser of Benjamin’s Desk, a coworking community for mobile professionals.

·Stockton Williams of the Urban Land Institute Terwiliger Center for Housing.

A panel discussion, “What makes downtowns vibrant?” will also be held, led by Jackie Turner with panelists:

·David Diaz; Downtown Raleigh Alliance.

·Roberta Fox; City of Raleigh Urban Design Center.

·Dr. Emil Malizia; UNC Department of City & Regional Planning.

·George Stanziale; STEWART.
