The Mooresville Planning Board voted 5-3 Thursday to recommend that the Town Board of Commissioners approve Hammerford Development Co.’s rezoning request to build a Costco and Academy Sports and Outdoors store on 41 acres at Brawley School and Talbert roads.
The property is off Interstate 77 at exit 35.
The petition has sparked protests from nearby residents concerned about the increased traffic the proposed project might bring to the area.
The Board of Commissioners is slated to hold a public hearing on Hammerford’s petition at its March 21 meeting, and may vote on the proposal on that date.
Costco would be the major anchor of the project, with the membership warehouse retailer occupying nearly 156,000 square feet. Academy Sports, which sells apparel and sporting goods, would occupy a second, nearly 63,000-square-foot building. Site plans also call for on-site fuel sales associated with Costco. Up to six outparcels would be developed individually.
Hammerford Development, based in Canada, is seeking a rezoning to conditional highway business from single-family residential.
