CONWAY, S.C. – If they were making a movie of the event, they might call it “Gone In 10 Seconds.”
Media outlets report that’s how long it took early Sunday to implode two 300-foot smokestacks at an old power plant on the main road to Myrtle Beach.
The smokestacks at Santee Cooper’s Grainger Generating Station in Conway were brought down with small explosive charges. The utility began operating the coal-fired plant in 1966. It was retired four years ago as Santee Cooper moved to a wider variety of fuels to generate power.
