Asheville’s tallest building getting makeover

ASHEVILLE – The tallest building in Asheville is getting a makeover after a half century.

Local media outlets report that Asheville City Council last week approved a rezoning request allowing the McKibbon Hotel Group to renovate the former BB&T building on Pack Square in the city.

Plans call for the 18-story building to be transformed into an upscale hotel with 140 rooms and 39 condominiums. The project also includes a conference center, a restaurant and retail space.

The work also includes a makeover of the outside of the 50-year-old building, which will be redone with steel, glass and synthetic stone.

The hotel group bought the building for $7.5 million. The company has not disclosed the cost of the renovations.
