Two restaurants new to the Charlotte market will open early next year at the Park Road Shopping Center.
They are Urban Cookhouse, whose menu focuses on wood-grilled meats, local produce, sandwiches and wraps, and Burtons Grill, which serves soups, salads, sandwiches, and entrees of fish, meats and pasta.
Urban Cookhouse, based in Columbia, South Carolina, has four franchises in Alabama and plans to open outlets in Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina. Burtons Grill, with headquarters in Andover, Massachusetts, has 10 locations on the east coast.
The two eateries will move into a new building at the site of the former Monkey Joe’s inflatable play center along East Woodlawn Road. Shopping center owner Edens gained Charlotte City Council approval last summer to redevelop the 1.1-acre site by rezoning it to neighborhood services from neighborhood business district.
“Bringing quality food to Park Road Shopping Center has been an ongoing goal of the redevelopment,” said Lyle Darnall, managing director of Edens, in a written statement. “These new vibrant concepts will complement our already unique collection of retail and restaurants.”
The Park Road Shopping Center opened in south Charlotte in 1956 as the first open-air shopping center in the city and the biggest center between Atlanta and Washington, D.C. Major tenants include Harris Teeter, Blackhawk Hardware, Michael’s, and Regal Park Cinemas.
Recent improvements to the site include improved traffic circulation, landscaping and sidewalks. The Columbia-based Edens has also painted the center’s shop fronts white.
