Charleston civic groups heard in development

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A state judge has ruled that preservation and neighborhood groups in Charleston will get a seat at the table in mediation talks to resolve a contentious redevelopment dispute in the city’s historic district.

But The Post and Courier reports those groups won’t be able to block any agreement reached between the city and The Beach Co.

The judge, after hearing arguments last week, decided that the local groups could send representatives to give their opinions at the mediation sessions set to begin next week.

After much opposition, the city’s Board of Architectural Review rejected the developer’s plans to build a new tower similar to the existing 150-foot tall Sargent Jasper building on Broad Street.

The developers then went to court and are seeking mediation.
