MATTHEWS, N.C. (AP) — Matthews Mayor Pro Tem Joseph Pata has resigned. Pata was arrested July 24 after a domestic incident on suspicion of assault inflicting serious injury.
The Matthews Police Department tells local media that 54-year-old Pata was arrested on the misdemeanor charge after officers were called to his home.
Police say officers at the scene found a woman who appeared to have injuries stemming from a physical assault. The woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening head injuries.
According to jail records, Pata was released from jail Monday.
Wednesday’s Matthews Town Council meeting has been canceled.
