Listen to this articleRALEIGH — The Pentagon is pairing with Duke Energy to build an 80-acre solar farm at Camp Lejeune, a sprawling U.S. Marine Corps base along the North Carolina coast.
Duke announced Thursday it will own and operate the 13-megawatt facility, which the company says will be built and brought online by the end of the year. The project will use American-made solar panels that will provide power to about 3,000 homes on sunny days.
The new solar farm at Lejeune is part of the company’s push to meet a North Carolina law requiring investor-owned utilities in the state to generate 12.5 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2021. Duke is investing about $500 million to expand its solar facilities. North Carolina currently ranks 4th nationally in installed solar generating capacity.
