NC mayor given job after scandal facing voters

CHARLOTTE — The politician named Charlotte’s mayor after his predecessor was busted on federal corruption charges wants to earn the job from voters himself.

Multiple media outlets reported that Dan Clodfelter filed documents with the Mecklenburg County elections board laying the legal groundwork for a campaign committee.

Clodfelter became mayor in April after replacing Patrick Cannon. He had been mayor only four months when he was arrested in March in an undercover FBI sting caught him accepting bribes to help developers with building permits. Cannon is serving more than three years in prison.

Clodfelter’s decision comes despite some city council members saying he promised not to run for his own two-year term when they appointed him to finish Cannon’s stint.
