Charlotte hires lawyer to probe complaint

CHARLOTTE – The city of Charlotte has hired an attorney to investigate the claims of a former fire department employee that she was terminated for complaining about the conditions of an office building.

The Charlotte Observer reported the city has hired Greensboro attorney Allison Van Laningham to review complaints by former fire investigator Crystal Eschert.

Eschert says the city fired her because she acted as a whistleblower in raising safety concerns about a building being renovated for the department.

The city denies that, saying Eschert was fired for what it said was an offensive Facebook post about the aftermath of the shooting of a black teen by a white police officer in Ferguson, Mo.

The newspaper said Eschert is the first person fired for violating the city’s social media policy.
