The N.C. Association of Realtors is warning homebuyers of an email scam rearing its head in the Tar Heel state. Computer hackers have been transmitting bogus money-wiring instructions to unsuspecting buyers who believe the directions are coming from their Realtors.
The notices appear legitimate because they contain personal information from the agent, whose email has been infiltrated. The unwary recipient is prompted to wire closing funds into a trust account. In reality, the money is forwarded directly to the fraudsters.
The N.C. Association of Realtors says those purchasing a home should verify wiring instructions and confirm receipt of funds with their closing attorney.
