County reactivates zoning adjustment board

Mecklenburg County’s Zoning Board of Adjustment, which has not been active for at least 10 years, according to county attorney Marvin Bethune, was reactivated at Wednesday night’s Board of Commissioners meeting to respond to an appeal that has been filed against a proposed cell tower in the county’s jurisdiction.

American Tower Corp. wants to put a cell tower on a 19-acre piece of property that’s owned by Harrison Methodist Church along Lancaster Highway where it intersects with Providence Road West in Pineville, between the South Carolina line and U.S. Highway 521.

“Basically (that area) became inactive, and since it was inactive, the clerks office just left (the board of adjustment) off the radar, but now we have an appeal, so now we have to reactivate it,” Bethune said.

The appeal was filed by Providence Road property owner David Knoble on Aug. 5.
