Strand residents upset with homeowner groups

CONWAY, S.C.  — Many Grand Strand homeowners have a message for state lawmakers: They don’t like the way their homeowners associations operate.

Area media outlets report that more than 1,000 homeowners turned out Wednesday for a meeting sponsored by the Horry County legislative delegation.

Those attending had a variety of complaints concerning homeowners groups including that association governing boards change rules at will, don’t take homeowners’ concerns seriously and are arbitrary in enforcing rules.

Republican Rep. Nelson Hardwick of Surfside Beach says delegation members think it might be good to require homeowners groups to post rules on a county website.

Another suggestion is that homeowners and associations settle their disputes in magistrate court, which would be less expensive than going to circuit court to settle issues.
