Historic Virginia estate to be auctioned

ROCKINGHAM – Iron Horse Auction Co. Inc. of Rockingham will be auctioning the estate of former Virginia Gov. Thomas B. Stanley on Sept. 27.

The Stoneleigh Estate was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and has 25 rooms in more than 20,000 square feet surrounded by 57 acres, including formal gardens overlooking the Smith River. It was built between 1929 and 1932 and is 56 miles north of Greensboro.

Personal property from the estate, including antiques, will also be sold online, ending Sept. 25, and will be available for viewing on Sept. 10 and 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Stanleytown estate at 375 Edgwood Drive.  The property will be available for inspection Sept. 6 and 13, and will end at 2 p.m. Sept. 27.

“This is one of the state of Virginia’s most important historical homes and is move-in ready,” said Thomas McInnis, COO of Iron Horse Auction Company. “No expense has been spared to bring the home to modern standard, the gardens are terrific, the river soothing and the view breathtaking.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of Virginia History.”
