SEC hosts investor outreach program

CHARLOTTE — The federal Securities and Exchange Commission will hold an investor outreach program from 2-4 p.m. Thursday in Room 901 of the UNC Charlotte Center City Campus, 320 E. 9th St., in collaboration with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The program is free and will focus on helping potential investors prevent and avoid investment fund fraud, particularly “affinity fraud,” in which investment schemes prey on members of identifiable groups such as religions, races, nationalities, veterans and others. Such schemes are often “Ponzi” and pyramid schemes in which new investor money is used to pay earlier investors in order to make the investment look successful.
